There’s just no point spending hours making something by hand if you don’t start out with top quality materials.
Silver jewellery from House of Cool will be sterling silver (925), sometimes combined with fine silver (999) which has a higher purity. Fine silver has some benefits over sterling in that it is softer to work with so it’s ideal for the strip that I use to bend around the outside of china pieces for example. Being more pure it’s also more expensive – but at the same time it’s less durable so it’s important to strike a balance. In some instances we also use gold (even 18 carat gold).
Items are not necessarily stamped – but in any case, a stamp on your jewellery is no guarantee that it is genuine. A 925 (sterling silver) or 999 (fine silver) stamp is not the same as a hallmark. Hallmarks are only done by an assay office and this is usually not cost effective for small items. It becomes a legal requirement once the jewellery is over a certain weight.
Pieces that are made by hand are not ‘perfect’. Since I’m not a machine, the jewellery will not be completely even in every respect. Hopefully as a lover of handmade things you will understand that it adds to the character.
Some of the broken china jewellery has curves. The piece may have been taken from a cup or saucer, or in the case of Royal Albert’s Old Country Roses it may have a ripple that is part of the pattern. Once again, this adds to the character of the piece.
